In order to prepare for class, you should begin by reading Chapter 1 of the Kennedy textbook. While reading, be able to describe the following:

• Early inhabitants of the Americas
• American Indian empires in Mesoamerica, the Southwest, and the Mississippi Valley
• American Indian cultures of North America at the time of European contact
